Morining Visit to Cerro Verde

While some of our group rested up for the big afternoon game, others took time to visit the volcano of Santa Ana from an excallent viewpoint called Cerro Verde (a national park).

This visit is part of our mission trip because the spectacular beauty of El Salvador contrasts with the depths of poverty which afflicts most of its people.  God in creation has bestowed beauty upon the land but people do not yet share fully in this dignity. It is a challenge to all people to insure that the dignity of creation is offered to all and no one is deprived of beauty in their own life.

Afternoon Soccer Match
Salvadorans vs. Gringos

The group gave it their all today out on the soccer field, unfortunatly that wasn’t enough to come close to winning. We began the game high- spirited after the inspiring pep-talk where we began with the sign of the cross and ended with “GRINGOS!!” (a gringo is the nickname that Salvadorians have for Americans) Before half time the game was tied, the Salvadorians took lead of the game as soon as the second half started. Their stamina and acclimation to the local weather and scorching sun proved an advantage to the home team, and a disadvantage to us especially because the water was M.I.A. After the massacre of the first game both teams lined up on center field to mix it up. Team uno was skins and team dos was shirts. The second game was better matched than the first, and the heat subsided to the impending storm clouds making it easier to endure. The soccer field was a nice change of scenery to interact with the Salvadorians, proving that we could learn lessons from them on and off the field. As we were retiring from the field a giant cross was visable from a distant mountain top reminding us that God was with us on our Journey.
