6:30 AM :: Breaksfast (due to our long trip Prayer will be
on our own today
7:15 AM :: Departure to Community of Cinquera,
Cinquera is located in the Department of Cabañas 2 hours
from Santa Ana. CFCA has been working with them for
over 10 years. The town of Cinquera was completely
destroyed during the war, most of its people left to the
mountains to personally fight in battle, many others were
catechists. The suffering of these people is deep,
many of the families living in this area have lost relatives
during the war, they call them MARTYRS. The current
situation has improved over the years, CFCA is offering
sponsorship to over 400 children and also scholarship
for many youth. The memories of the war are
not forgotten in this town and they do not want to forget.

Lito, A CFCA coordinator says "I can not forget the
moments when I had to leave home and fight, the peace
we have now has to do with everybody’s suffering."
9:30 AM :: Arrival at Cinquera Parish

“There is a sense of knowing that what we learned here today can be shared with the world and that doing so might change what is not understood”-Joe Dorfmeister

Today was quite interesting. We started off the day as we did every other day with morning prayer followed by a hearty breakfast of pancakes, beans, eggs, and cereal. The day started earlier as usual because the ride to the town that we had to visit was about two and half hours away.  Cinquera was our destination. Henry told us that this village was extremely damaged by the civil war and it is quickly being rebuilt with help from various groups.  We arrived in a town that was brightly decorated with political graffiti and wartime memorabilia.  The group was once again greeted by the locals with a warm welcome. Many locals gave their thanks and we were given a short history of the war from the towns’ point-of-view.  It was interesting to hear how this mountain town is doing everything in its effort to re-establish itself after the civil war.

Next on the agenda was a visit to various town “tiendas”, or stores, and saw different homemade herbal remedies as well as handmade clothing articles.  After a short walk through the town, we resided back to the CFCA center for lunch and then an intellectual conversation with a local catechist Don Pablo.

Don Pablo was part of the Christian community that was looking for social reform during the 1980’s. He spoke of his true feelings for the present and future state of the country as a whole.  To be honest, it was a lot to take in and it sparked thought in each and every one of us.

This whole trip has sparked thought in many of us. For me, it is my third year journeying here and it still makes me think. It is pretty amazing how much we actually accomplished by being here.  It is only the beginning…
